Stephen Hawking on God

The universe is governed by the laws of science. The laws may have been decreed by God, but God does not intervene to break the laws

I really like this.

Fear Breeds Fear

Europe is a Christian-based society. We are used to church towers. Mosques do not belong to European culture. That's happening far too much already. We want to stop that.

A very unfortunate story where the Swiss people voted to ban certain Islamic buildings from being constructed is a blow to tolerance and respect. Many seem blind to the fact that alienating a group's rights as human beings does nothing to promote peaceful coexistence.

Many people seem unhinged when thinking of the possibility that they will one day be outnumbered by another group of people. And I guess I can understand their fear. If the rule goes that the powered majority consistently denies respect to minorities, I'd also be worried about losing such a position. Maybe though, if people in power respected the values and rights of their peers who hold less influence (which is supposed to be a fundamental principle of American democracy), we could evolve past a cavemen-like rallying of 'us versus them' and progress more smoothly as a society.

Excellent explanation of what "agnostic" and "atheist" really mean

Agnosticism deals with one's claim to knowledge on a subject; atheism describes one's lack of belief in deities. They are not mutually exclusive terms. If you don't claim to know whether or not gods exist, regardless of your belief or lack thereof, you are agnostic. Agnostic simply means "without knowledge." You can be an agnostic atheist (I don't know, but I don't believe in gods), or an agnostic theist (I don't know, but I do believe in god/s). A gnostic atheist/theist would claim to know their position is true. A gnostic theist holds the position, "I believe in god and I know he exists". A gnostic atheist is the opposite, "I know there is no god.

Finally a succinct and understandable definition of these terms.

Astrologers: Solar Eclipse Will Cause World Violence

This week's solar eclipse has Indian astrologers predicting violence and turmoil across the world, AFP reported.

In Hindu mythology, the two demons Rahu and Ketu are said to "swallow" the sun during eclipses. It takes the life-giving life and causes food to become inedile and water undrinkable, AFP reported.

...and this is precisely why I love the movie, "Religulous" (http://www.lionsgate.com/religulous).>

They brought their guns to church--what's next?

Outside the church a gun totting worshiper said, "nowhere in the Bible does it say you shouldn't own a gun."

Two things surprise me here:

1. "Gun totting" isn't a hyphenated phrase?
2. I was unaware that Jesus carried a piece.

Texas town says goodbye to 'hello' | mndaily.com

At his urging, the Kleberg County commissioners on Monday unanimously designated "heaven-o" as the county's official greeting. The reason: "hello" contains the word "hell.

Is this really what anybody should be spending their time on? Is coming to this town and saying "hello" eventually going to be viewed as offensive?
