Here are some more pictures from our amazing road trip to Vermont (and Niagara Falls and Philadelphia)! The trip ended at 2305 miles and we covered 10 states.

Our Vermont Trip - Part 1

(download)
Rachael and I are most of the way through our trip to Vermont for a friend's wedding (we've turned it into a full-fledged vacation). It's our longest road trip as a couple and has been tons of fun. So far we've logged over 1500 miles, covered 9 states, and 2 countries!

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Niagara Falls is gorgeous, but the IMAX movie blows ass (though it was good to make fun of).
  • The first person to go over the falls intentionally and survive was a 63-year old woman. Nice.
  • If you can put pumpkin in it, I've consumed it on this trip (coffee, beer, etc.).
  • Vermont is fucking beautiful (at least during this time of year).
  • Due to an error on my part we were almost late to the pre-wedding dinner and had to change into dress clothes at a gas station.
  • The wedding and pre/post activities were insanely fun. Great food, fun new people, ridiculously good weather, and a to-the-point-but-emotion-filled ceremony.
  • Pennsylvania's alcohol laws are unbelievably stupid. I'm writing this from memory so it may not be exactly correct: Wine and liquor is only sold by state-owned stores, alcohol sales end at 9pm, and you can only buy beer for home consumption from a distributor or a licensed tavern (and from taverns there seems to be a purchase limit of two 6-packs).

Food from our Korean trip

(download)
Here's a quick look at a lot of the food we had on our trip! Major highlights:

  • Street vendors are all over and most of their food was pretty awesome (and super cheap)
  • Kimchi is served everywhere and can cure anything apparently
  • The picture with the clams on the grill is from the restaurant where we had to cook for ourselves
  • I had a vietnamese coffee; the function was so confusing that I ended up spilling coffee all over the table

I'm bummed that we never found live octopus--apparently you can order it and it is still twitching when it arrives on your plate. I'm also bummed that we never found dog on the menu. Almost every meal was delicious, though I have to say that Korean food is not my favorite.

Seoul Tower

(download)

On the ground with signs in Korean and not a white face in the crowd, it all seems "us" and "them." From the heights of Seoul Tower looking at a pulsating city veining out in all directions (Seoul is the second largest city on the planet), everything just seems human.

The Randomest Place on Earth

The Expo Park here in Daejeon, Korea is one of the weirder places I've seen. It felt like a mini-Disney theme park, though there was no admission to get in, and with the exception of several large groups of school children, it was nearly deserted. It looked like they had a brainstorming meeting as to what to include in the park and took every fucked up suggestion uttered. A glass pyramid? Sure! A collection of severed ant body parts as bronze statues? You got it!

All that said, it was an impressive place and the children were super excited to try their English on us.

Also, tiny korean children + holding hands with each other + body-sized backpacks = adorable.
